What is going on in NZ??

This is a clip from WHO from a couple of months ago. At the time, while people laughed and said it would never happen here, that they couldn’t have meant what it sounds like, some of us watched the Covid Response Act pass and warned that this is exactly the senario that we should be wary of in New Zealand.

Fast forward to this week ... and here it is.

After Dr. Bloomfield’s announcement yesterday, I have been trying to get clear information from MoH about what they are proposing for Covid positive cases. What can families expect to happen?

Will removal to quarantine be compulsory?

Will children be accompanied?

What happens to solo parents with a few kids?

What about large families?

How many can go?

And so on ...

It looked last night like there might be some clarity. I was told that quarantine would be voluntary and Covid positive children could take a parent or guardian.

But this morning, I have read accounts by of two families currently in regular quarantine who kids were tried to be removed from them. One woman with 5 kids threatened contacting lawyers to keep her 11 and 12 year olds in her room. The other fought to keep her 2 year old with her. What is going on?

This morning I was also told by the Covid response team that although parents and children would stay together should a child be found Covid positive, quarantine would be mandatory.

When I pressed for more details and highlighted the inconsistencies in the statements I was receiving, a well as gross vagueness, I was directed to watch the briefing at 1pm where all would be explained.

So I watched that briefing. Bloomfield told us that the cluster of 38 are in quarantine. He didn’t make it clear who was with staying with who, and he didn’t give any information about what happens in future cases.

Not one reporter asked any questions about it.

So, right now we don’t know if quarantine is mandatory or voluntary for community cases.

We don’t know what happens if a parent is found positive - can they take children into quarantine, and if so, how many? Who’s paying?

Is there a charge for non-positive people? We are told that quarantine is proposed to minimise family spread but we don’t know if families will be able to stay together or will be separated once inside.

We don’t know anything.

And now, the thread where I and others were corresponding with the Covid team - looks like it’s been deleted.

What’s going on New Zealand?

Do you know what happens to your family if you or one of your children tests positive?
