One Shot

In January 2009 I was priviliged to Coach a great bunch of young 7s Rugby players to win a National 7s Championship representing North Harbour.

During the course of our campaign,we came up with various games and themes all designed to keep us on our toes and focused on the big prize. The main phrase which we adopted fiercely was "One Shot."

We reminded ourselves over and over, that the opportunity to become National Champions may only come around once in a lifetime. Many great 7s players had never been part of National Champion teams, and many great players may have got to the great stage but failed at the final hurdle. We knew that we had the opportunity, and that we had to take it. There would never be another chance that we collectively, would ever get again. We had "One Shot" at it.
North Harbour 7s 2009

Too many times over the years as both a Player and as a Coach,I've seen players come off the field being totally shattered with the result and/or with their performance. And trust me,I've been there myself. That feeling of failure is tough to take, especially when you absolutely know that you were better and that you simply 'blew it'...but you can't play the game again..you want to..but you can't..it's done, dusted, over with.

I ask all my players to take the shot. The opportunity is presenting itself,it is there looking at you on a plate..just go and grab it. There are no second chances. YOU CANNOT PLAY THE GAME AGAIN TOMORROW.

In 2009 we took the shot. The tortuous trainings, the commitment to the team and the sacrifices we all made were all worth it when we were presented with the trophy that symbolised "New Zealand Rugby 7s Champions".

You will always miss 100% of the shots that you never take. Always take the shot. You may live to regret it if you don't. When opportunity presents itself, grab it by the throat and ride it for all is worth. The Shot may not be there on another day.
