How did this happen?? The '3 Ts'

The most common question I get asked after I have presented my report of findings to my patients is "How did this happen?"

Patients are often confused that there was no traumatic event leading up to being in pain. Generally the pain has come on slowly or just appeared after waking one morning. We nearly always try and associate this with an episode of heavy lifting or an accident of some sort etc.

I explain the '3 Ts'...Trauma is the obvious reason...the hit in rugby, the fall down the stairs, the car accident..But the least obvious ones are actually the most common. Thoughts and Toxins!
The '3 Ts' and your back pain

So as Chiropractors and healthcare providers the '3 Ts' are Physical (Trauma),Emotional (Thoughts) and Chemical (Toxins) reasons for sudden onset of pain.

The Emotional reasons are complex and varied but generally involve day to day stressors from work and family life. * Stress can lead to changes in the serum level of many hormones including glucocorticoids, catecholamines, growth hormone and prolactin. Some of these changes are necessary for the fight or flight response to protect oneself. Some of these stressful responses can lead to endocrine disorders like Graves Disease, gonadal dysfunction, psychosexual dwarfism and obesity. Stress can also alter the clinical status of many preexisting endocrine disorders such as precipitation of adrenal crisis and thyroid storm * (www.nlm.nih.gov)

So,as your anxious behaviours increase, so will your body's stress and its effects, including causing severely tight muscles in the back resulting in joint dysfunction and nerve compression which compounds an already underperforming and stressed body!

The Chemical reasons may be caused by a variety of factors including but not limited to exposure to perfumes, insecticides, food additives and pharmaceutical drugs. Our amazing body has 5 detox organs. Skin, Lungs, Kidneys, Liver and Intestines. These organs help to pull out toxins in our bodies that we are exposed to every day. If our body is healthy and our detox pathways are open and working properly then we can expect to live a healthy and symptom free lifestyle. But if these detox organs are overwhelmed with toxins then our body lets us know in the form of symptoms that it is stressed and overloaded. It cries out for help! And some of those symptoms that many times are ignored or simply not associated with toxic overload is once again that of muscle tension, joint dysfunction and nerve interference.

For a happy, healthy and functioning spine and nervous system see your Chiropractor. It is much much more than just a sore back.
